Introducing Ayurveda LifeLab™

What is Ayurveda LifeLab™?

The year 2020 was a time of change and brought many things into focus. Our offerings at Blue Sage Ayurveda were continuing to evolve with the times as well. As the methodology of offering Ayurvedic Pancha Karma and Rejuvenation programs in modern times has come further into focus, Ayurveda LifeLab™ came into being.

The Creation of Ayurveda LifeLab™ and the resulting programs are a response to the resounding health challenges, concerns and imbalances of our modern times.  A contemporary perspective, applying the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda with the current state of the world, naturally birthed forward this call to action. We see Ayurveda LifeLab™ as an integral part of the emerging movement of "New Ayurveda".

Ayurveda LifeLab™ acknowledges that life is a living process.…and that we ourselves are living dynamic beings on a journey to experience wholeness.  Life is not something to be “hacked” through, or something to be thrown aside in an effort to find “shortcuts”, as if we have something better to “do” than fully live and experience this life.  How is it many of us (collectively) have come to believe that life was something that we must get through and over with as soon as possible?  What are we rushing towards???

These are important questions that we must ask ourselves if there is any hope of finding a life of balance that can result in peace of mind and ease of being.  Within the Ayurveda LifeLab™ programs, our intention is to assist you in creating ways that compel as many “Symptoms of Wellness” as you desire.  Working in this way, you can manifest your optimal lifestyle.

You may ask, “What do you mean by Symptoms of Wellness?” Simply put, this represents symptoms or expressions of balance that you may experience, such as healthy digestion and elimination, vitality in your daily life, balanced rest and deeper sleep cycles, and overall greater peace of mind. In other words, when there are fewer or no imbalances present, you feel better and are more free to pursue your highest potential to live a healthy life!

Ayurveda is rooted in the fundamental, core principle that maintaining sufficient agni, or "fire", is key to health, well-being and longevity.  It can be said that the majority of the health crisis’ we now face as a collective are a result of insufficient, or imbalanced, agni, specifically as it relates to the strength of digestive agni, or digestive fire.  This can show up in the inability to assimilate nutrients, poor elimination patterns, excessive gas and bloating, mental and emotional imbalances , skin conditions, weakened detoxification and immune functions, chronic aches and pains, fatigue and low energy, disturbed sleep and blood sugar disregulation.

Traditionally, Ayurveda recommends, seasonal cleansing to reset digestive fire on a regular basis and unburden our bodies from the toxic load and stressors that may be contributing to overall health imbalances.  Ayurvedic cleansing and detoxification involves preparing the body to “clean house” by slowly eliminating foods and drinks that may be contributing to a weakened digestive fire and taking an herbal or oil laxative to flush accumulated toxins. This is accomplished by ingesting ghee each day to help loosen accumulated toxins, encouraging the movement of toxins with daily self-oil massage, and rejuvenating our digestive fire to a place of strength and balance.

Seasonal and periodic Ayurvedic cleansing can contribute to more energy, increased clarity, shedding excess weight, improved digestion, less body pain, mental and emotional stability, improved quality of sleep, immune resiliency, fewer seasonal allergies, and an improved relationship with food.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I complete an Ayurvedic cleanse?

There are many reasons that our body does not eliminate properly and can, over time, accumulate a burden of physical, mental and emotional toxic load.  We can compare stagnation in any of these areas to a clogged drain that results in a sewage backup.  This burden on our ability to seamlessly detoxify on a daily basis can present in such ways as irregular bowel movements, digestive challenges, joint or lymphatic swelling, brain fog, excessive or nonexistent sweat and extreme emotional reactions.  An Ayurvedic cleanse gives your body the opportunity to pause, clear the channels of detoxification (the body’s drains) and reset these pathways resulting in free flowing elimination.

What are the benefits of completing this cleanse process?

Results will vary depending on your specific body type and current wellness state. However, in general, most participants experience some form of weight loss, improved digestion, mental clarity, spiritual lightness, increased energy, improved sleep, less body and joint pain, improved immune function and mood stability.

I’ve already completed one cleanse process with you. Is is necessary to do another one?

Yes!  Our bodies are continuously bombarded daily with toxins taken in through all of our senses.  Ayurveda recommends seasonal cleansing at least one time per year, and optimally 3-4 times per year with the change each seasons.  We recommend consulting with a practitioner to understand what frequency is best for you.

How should I expect to feel during the cleanse process?

How you will feel during the cleanse is unique to each person. In general there will be periods of low energy when you will want to do your best in not over exerting yourself, and periods of increased energy with great clarity and ease. Occasionally individuals do experience nausea with ingesting high doses of ghee (5-7 teaspoons), however this is usually short lived and passes relatively quickly.

What is the purpose of ingesting ghee during the beginning phase of the cleanse process?

Ghee has a unique ability to loosen and bind to accumulated toxic impurities that may be clogging detoxification pathways. During the purgation phase of the cleanse process and through completing a daily self-oil massage (abhyanga) these impurities will be removed through the channels of elimination.

What is a mono diet and what will I be able to eat during the 10-14 day program?

A mono diet focuses on eating a diet that is simple with few ingredients, allowing the digestive system to rest and heal while your body focuses on clearing the pathways of detoxification and elimination.  The mono diet traditionally used in Ayurvedic cleansing is that of kitchari (a combination of basmati rice, yellow mung dahl, digestive spices and an option for seasonal, well-cooked vegetables).  Kitchari is a complete meal on its own, offering ample protein and carbohydrates for nourishment throughout the cleanse process, and is generally consumed 2-3x/day throughout the cleanse.  There is also an option to incorporate a simple grain porridge (recipe included in the program) for breakfast, baked or well cooked apples and pears, seasonal berries, and up to 2 tablespoons of either pumpkin or sunflower seeds in between meals.

We will be available throughout the cleanse process to provide guidance on specific dietary restrictions, should that apply to you.

Do I need to plan on taking time off from work during the cleanse process?

It is recommended to minimize activity as much as possible, however we realize that many people have jobs and families to tend to during the cleanse process. If that is your case, do your best to minimize any non-essential activities as much as possible. You may experience low energy, fatigue and mild discomfort throughout specific periods of the cleanse, and want to reserve your energy for the body to “clean house”. Too many distractions will pull your body away from clearing, repairing and healing.

Can I continue my normal exercise routine?

Light exercise can be maintained outside of the Purgation Phase days if the signals from your body are telling you that you have the energy reserve to do so. Light exercise can include gentle yoga and stretching, walking at a moderate pace, tai chi and moderate breath work. On purgation days, it is more important to reserve your vital core energy for the process of elimination. Distracting your body with excess and non-essential activity will not allow for maximum results.

Are there recommended bodywork treatments I should receive throughout the cleanse?

If you have access to a trained Ayurvedic body therapist, receiving Abhyanga massage at least twice per week can be beneficial. Moist sauna, therapeutic sweating, and baths are also recommended to compel sweating. This is the best time for Far-infared or dry sauna.

Should I discontinue use of my herbal supplements and/or prescription medications?

Please consult with your primary healthcare and/or Ayurvedic provider regarding the cleanse process and their direction on continuing any supplement or prescription protocols throughout the program.

What type of oil should I purchase for my daily self-abhyanga massage?

We recommend selecting an organic, unrefined or cold pressed oil for your daily self massage.  There are numerous good resources available to purchase both as base oils or herbal oils, and can be found in the Recommended Resources section on the Blue Sage Ayurveda LifeLab™ Home Cleanse portal.  In addition, you can generally find good quality organic base oils in the cooking section of your local organic grocery store or co-op.

The type of base oil recommended will vary from season to season.  In Ayurveda, opposites balance and like attracts like.  We therefore want to select an oil that contains some of the properties opposite to what is taking place in nature in order to achieve balance. Here are some general guidelines:

Spring season is cool, damp, moist – select an oil that is neutral, light, and clearing, such as organic sunflower oil.

Summer / early fall season is hot, dry, irritating – select an oil that is cooling, moisturizing and soothing, such as organic coconut oil.

The late fall season is cold, variable, unpredictable – select an oil that is heavy, grounding and nourishing, such as organic sesame oil.

If you have a self-massage oil that you have been using on a regular basis and is currently working for your body type, please feel free to continue with that selection.

I am vegan and / or have a dairy intolerance. Are there any options to taking ghee internally during the Internal Oleation phase of the cleanse?

Many people who are lactose intolerant use ghee as a butter alternative. In the cooking process of making ghee, the two most common dairy allergens (casein and lactose) are removed from the final product, resulting in ghee being 99.9% lactose free. In addition, ghee contains high levels of butyric acid, a short-chain fatty acid that has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and can assist with healing an imbalanced gut wall lining (i.e., leaky gut). Ghee has not been shown to cause the same lactose intolerance symptoms, such as bloating, skin rashes, diarrhea, nausea or gas as ingesting other dairy products.

Grass fed ghee is the first suggested option in Ayurvedic cleansing.  If you choose not to use ghee during the cleanse program, for an intolerance or otherwise, additional suggestions include coconut oil, flax oil or olive oil (all one-to-one replacements for ghee in  the cooking process and Internal Oleation).
